Alcohol Review - Soju

Recently I was confused as fuck in an Asian market, pondering how in the world Koreans without any semblance of the English language can navigate a Fred Meyer's,  when a sparkling green bottle appeared in my horizon. Upon investigation, I noticed not only a proof, but a goofy cartoon of PSY drinking and Gangnam Styling (seriously) on the label.  I figured, fuck it, and shelled out, hoping this mysterious new drink might have me riding an imaginary horse at a party soon.

After arriving at home, I researched (checked Wikipedia) and discovered I had purchased Soju, a rice based Korean favorite. Soju comes in a 375 ml bottle, half the size of a normal 5th. Additionally, the alcohol content hovers around 20% once more roughly half of the standard liquor. This means that in total, a Soju container pathetically only packs about four shots. Luckily, these little devils only cost about three bucks. Four shots for three bucks ain't too bad.

Tastewise, at just 40 proof, I was expecting delicious. For comparison's sake, Soju has the same alcohol content as Malibu rum, one of the most enjoyable liquors around (not that I have a vagina or anything). Instead, I slurped down what appeared to be watery vodka. The burn was far less intense obviously, but I still found the drink unpleasant. And the rice definitely came through. And by the end of the bottle, I still had only had 4 shots. Ugh.

I'm not really sure who this appeals to besides Koreans. It won't get a guy drunk, and it lacks the flavor of similarly proofed girly drinks. There are much better ways to go than Soju.

Album Review: Yeezus - Kanye West

  • Here's an album debate/review on Kanye West's Yeezus between Heartbreaker (aka Connor) and Brono (Chris), which turned into a Facebook conversation when our other form of communication fell out. Enjoy.

Album Review: Kid Ink - Almost Home EP

Before you listen to the EP, let me ask: were you already a fan of Kid Ink's music? Because if you've already heard Up & Away or Daydreamer and NOT enjoyed it, don't expect Almost Home to twirl your perception around. But if you have, you're going to have a great time over the next half hour.

Stanley Cup Final Preview

Puck drop for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final is tonight at 5:00 PST and 8:00 in the east coast on NBC. The Chicago Blackhawks will be representing the Western Conference while the Boston Bruins are coming out of the Eastern conference. The #1 seed and President trophy winner Chicago Blackhawks will have home ice advantage this series and that will certainly come in useful as they have been excellent at home with a 9-1 record. Boston however is 5-2 on the road this post season and is the only team with a winning record on the road.

Champions League Final Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund

As not enough of you know, the Champions League Final happens tomorrow, 5/25/2013, at like 7 PM on Fox Soccer Channel, or maybe sometime earlier on a different network. As less of you know, it's an all-German final this year. After Bayern Munich arsoned Barcelona in a 7-0 aggregate victory and Borussia Dortmund snuck away with a 4-3 win against Real Madrid, Germany will finally reclaim itself as a soccer powerhouse on Saturday, as a guaranteed winner will come from the most-liked (according to recent studies) and most-populated (according to Google) country in Europe.

"Basically, the mid-major universe imploded upon itself"...thoughts on Gonzaga and other college basketball non sequiturs

By now everyone's bracket has long been fucked and you're probably pissed off about losing your money in a tournament you knew would go your way because of your advanced college basketball insight. If you're a Washingtonian, you're especially screwed because our state's response to the sadly inconsistent Huskies and forever futile Cougars, the pure, white-hearted (and skinned, mostly) Gonzaga Bulldogs, wet the bed in the second round against Witchita State after promising a good shot at attending the last weekend. So with that in mind, instead of discussing basketball, let's sit down and think about exactly what the loss means, for Gonzaga, for the West Coast, for mid-majors, and for basketball in general.

The Weekly Playlist!

It's been a while, so 10 songs this week. Plus, I burned a CD yesterday for the first time in a long time, so I'm in the mood to make a playlist. Let's bump some tunes.

Maker's Mark Whisky

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
I am the one and only (at least that I know) Mark Stinson II, a.k.a. Daddy. I am your resident alcohol connoisseur or college drunk as others may prefer to call it. I normally am not a fan of prose unless of course I am drunk, which I am in the current state of mind. I have an affinity for the taste and effects of most alcohols but my personal favorites involve that of the whiskey and beer variety.
The alcohol that I feel the present need to review is Makers Mark Whisky.

NHL Trade Deadline

Only about 15 games left in the regular season and the April 3rd trade deadline is rapidly approaching. This is the time of year when GM’s evaluate their team and determine what additional pieces their team needs to make that extra push of contending for the cup or making the playoffs.

Realignment, Relocation, and Expansion

The NHL has recently passed a new realignment that will go into effect next season. The proposal would divide the league into four divisions and the top three teams from each division would make the playoffs and two wild-card teams from each conference. Here are the proposed divisions:
The new playoff format is different, to say the least.

The Weekly Playlist!

Two things factor into this week's playlist. 1) I've been listening to a lot of electronic lately, so expect a list heavy on that. 2) I'm back in Tacoma, and I'm showing some local love. Last weekend of Spring Break, and regardless of the midterm I have due on Monday, I intend to make it a great one. Let's get it.

NHL mid-season evaluation

Here we are almost half way into the NHL season and the Blackhawks still haven't lost. Sorry its been such a long time sense my lost posting. A lot has happened in the NHL between now and then, many of my pre-season predictions appear to be on the right track, and some others not to much (Anaheim is drastically exceeding expectations).

The Weekly Playlist!

Second straight sober weekend, but that doesn't mean I can't vibe out to sick songs all weekend long! And I've been listening mostly to rap lately, so expect a hip-hop heavy list this week.

Flux Pavilion recently released a new EP, titled "Blow the Roof". A few of the tracks had already hit the music blogs and iTunes store, but it's a mostly unheard collection.

The Weekly Playlist

Sometimes, people get to music a little late. I had a friend who, last spring, couldn't stop playing "High" by Big Sean. Yeah, the one you heard in like 2010 or whenever it came out, he was bumping until deep into 2012. But that's ok; it wasn't new, but it was still good. So here we are with the first "Weekly Playlist", a cluster of jams I've been playing this past week. I can't promise you all new songs, but I can guarantee an enjoyable 8 song list, week after week, of songs you might not have heard yet, never would have heard, or love and miss. Without further ado...

New Song Spotlight - Purple Reign by Los

With Ray Lewis back for the playoffs, dancing and tackling his way to glory, and Joe Flacco throwing those impeccably placed downfield passes, the Ravens have made the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history (in 2001, they won with Lewis earning Super Bowl MVP honors). Understandably, a lot of people (including myself) are pretty damn excited about it, but none more than Baltimore native and rapper Los, the perfect candidate to lay down a Baltimore themed anthem. Which he did. Enjoy.

NHL Western Conference Preview

NHL Western Conference Preview

After months of pain and suffering for all NHL fans out there, the season is finally back and NHL fans out there can all stop pretending to care about the NBA, AHL, ECHL, College Football or whatever other pathetic excuse of sports league was used to substitute the NHL.
Now that the NHL is finally back on ice lets take team by team look at what is in store for the 2013 season.

Throwback Thursday by Heartbreaker

Every Thursday, all our staff are encouraged to post an older song they miss and would like to bring attention back to.

The Return of the Sonics: A Friendly Reminder to Appreciate the Team

After five excruciatingly long seasons, where we watched the rise, rise, and continued rise of the Oklahoma City Thunder, grudgingly scattered our fandom among the other 29 teams, and even dealt with the demise of top local product Brandon Roy, the Seattle SuperSonics are finally returning for the 2013-14 NBA season, to the immense relief of Washington's basketball faithful. Chris Hansen, aka my hero, purchased the Sacramento Kings for $525 million (time out...525 million. Let that sink in. 525 million! We owe Chris Hansen a gift basket or Macy's gift card, at least). They will spend two or three years playing in the once-deemed NBA unsuitable Key Arena before moving into the under-construction new arena (Check out this sick ass design template here). For all of us buying merchandise, attending rallies, and complaining on Facebook, the reincarnation of the Sonics is a second coming of Adidas proportions, a chance to apologize to and make up with an estranged lover. But herein lies my only concern; a douchebag ex boyfriend might beg for the return of his girlfriend, promising her that this time, things will be different, that he's a changed man, that things weren't so bad in the first place. And, inevitably, when she falls for the smiles and the words ("all the right things"), she takes him back, he takes advantage of her, and she's miserable again.

Yo

What's up guys.

Real content coming soon, I just wanted to make sure the first post didn't have to do with Washington.

For those who don't know, this blog was started by my roommate, my ex-roommate and I, all sophomores at LMU. Hopefully this thing actually takes off and we don't get lazy. But yeah, thanks for checking us out. I hope we make it worth your while.
